How does it work?
Our response to pain is mediated by factors such as prostaglandins, when
these are present our sensitivity to pain increases. Components of our
essential oil blend, namely the methyl salicylate, can inhibit the formation
of these prostaglandins, making it an effective pain-relieving product!

Let's take a look at our ingredients:

Clary sage, Salvia sclarea, is a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant,
and antispasmodic essential oil. This can be extremely beneficial in the
context of muscle cramps and spasms, particularly helpful in easing
period pain for women. Clinical studies confirmed that it helps relieve
period ramps when applied topically to the lower abdomen.

Methyl salicylate, a constituent of wintergreen, Gaultheria procumbens,
is closely related to the active compound in aspirin. Studies have
shown when this is applied to the skin it exerts a pain-relieving effect.
It has been used clinically to treat arthritic conditions, joint pains,
fever, and inflammation. A classic anti-inflammatory compound called
salicylate acid is a metabolic product of wintergreen and acts as a
COX-2 inhibitor.

In combination with our peppermint oil, Mentha piperita, the
wintergreen is more effective at pain relief and vice versa. Studies
have confirmed it’s efficacy as being comparable to acetylsalicylic
acid in the treatment of headaches, targeting the pathophysiology in
a multifactorial way, without the side-effects! Additionally, the menthol
component when in contact with the skin has a cooling and numbing
effect, rendering it effective as a local anaesthetic. Additionally, peppermint oil contains the aromatic benefit. When inhaled, it stimulates our olfactory pathways that communicate with the control centre in our brain, our hypothalamus. Here, a hormone
called corticotropin hormone, a hormone that initiates our stress
response is inhibited and the adrenals halt the release the stress
hormone, cortisol. The effect is overall mood enhancement, through
stress and anxiety reduction. The smell can also help alleviate feelings
of nausea.

Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus globulus Labill, is an anti-inflammatory and
anti-spasmodic that eases swelling and redness when applied to sore
muscles and joints. It eases cramps by reducing smooth muscle
contractions. The aromatic effects of eucalyptus on the respiratory
system are incredible, it can help open the airways, decrease
inflammation, aids in asthmatic conditions, sinusitis, and worsening
lung conditions.

Camphor, Cinnamomum camphora, is used commonly for it’s
anti-inflammatory actions, anti-spasmodic, pain-reducing action, as
well as it’s ability to mitigate chest congestion. Studies have confirmed
camphor’s ability to decrease inflammation through reducing
signalling molecules responsible for inflammatory pathways. Other
studies indicated it’s efficacy in relieving smooth muscle contractions.
Lavender, Lavendula angustifolia, has been used traditionally and is
well- known for it’s anti-depressant and mood enhancing benefits. It
may aid in inducing sleep, making it useful for insomniacs.

Our formulation was created to have a “hot and cold” sensation, both
a warming and a cooling effect. This is based on the same concept as
when we get an injury and we apply a hot and cold compress to lower
the inflammation. The menthol provides the cooling effect; whereas
the methyl salicylate gives us the heat factor. Together, we can enjoy
the anti-inflammatory benefits!

Enjoy life, pain-free!
